Girl Germs Episode 2 – Little Drummer Girls

Today’s episode of Girl Germs is an ode to the drummer—the lady drummer, that is. Female drummers are often thought of as some rare, novel species. But if you simply take the time to look around you’ll find they are everywhere, thousands of them spanning genres as diverse as jazz, Tropicalia and metal (even Dana’s mom is a lady drummer!). In fact, once we started making this playlist, we had a pretty hard time narrowing it down.

In this show we give props to a few of our favorite punk, riot grrrl, rock and indie rock drummers: classics (Mo Tucker of the Velvet Underground, Janet Weiss of Quasi and Sleater-Kinney), a few locals (Laura F. Bennett of Red Pens, Lori Barbero of Babes in Toyland, Mimi Parker of Low) and some newbies (Carla Azar of Autolux). And then there’s Yoshimi (of Boredoms, OOIOO and Free Kitten), who is so awesome and genre-defying that we snuck in two of her songs.

Red Pens – Limitations (Limitations)
Babes in Toyland – Boto (W) Rap (Spanking Machine)
Butthole Surfers – Dum Dum (Psychic…Powerless…Another Man’s Sac)
The Evens – Everybody Knows (Get Evens)
Bratmobile – Girl Germs (1991 Compilation from Kill Rock Stars)
OOIOO – Uma (Taiga)
Low – Peanut Butter Toast and American Bandstand (Lifetime of Temporary Relief)
The Velvet Underground – What Goes On (The Velvet Underground)
Autolux – Audience No. 2 (Transit Transit)
Quasi – Our Happiness is Guaranteed (Featuring Birds)
Boredoms – Super Going (Super Are)
