The Midwest Ska Moment Episode 36 – Brotherhood by Sans Pants

January 25th, 2010

Today’s band shows us that hard work, dedication, practice, and “dropping trou” can lead to some really catchy ska music!  They are of course Sans Pants from Minneapolis, MN.  Let’s just hope they don’t translate the last skill to their daily lives!

Track of the Day: A live recording of “Brotherhood” by Sans Pants

The Midwest Ska Moment Episode 35 – There’s A Metalhead In The Parking Lot by Slapstick

January 22nd, 2010

It’s another Fallen Hero Friday on MSM!  Today’s band, Slapstick from Chicago, IL,  existed in the mid-1990’s which happened to be my formative years.  They were only around for limited time, like the McRib, but went on to form about a dozen other bands.

Track of the day: “There’s A Metalhead In The Parking Lot” by Slapstick from the collection Slapstick on Asian Man Records

The Midwest Ska Moment Episode 34 – It’s My Life by We Are The Union

January 21st, 2010

Detroit’s We Are The Union are a band that has a lot going for it.  Independent record label support, a driving punk sound, catchy vocal hooks, a never-ending youthful energy, and red-hot horns to take the edge off.  Makes me want to quit my job and tour full-time!

Track of the Day:
“It’s My Life (And It’s Ending One Minute At A Time)” by We Are The Union from the album Who We Are

The Midwest Ska Moment Episode 33 – Messin’ Around by Deal’s Gone Bad

January 20th, 2010

Some of the best music to ever come out of the Windy City, it’s the reggae-soul sounds of Deal’s Gone Bad.  They were one of the first reggae bands I ever saw live.  Speaking of live shows, I don’t know what’s better, their laid back grooves or Todd’s handlebar moustache!

Track of the Day: “Messin’ Around” by Deal’s Gone Bad from the album The Ramblers on Megalith Records

The Midwest Ska Moment Episode 32 – Fun With Amanda by Rocksteady Breakfast

January 19th, 2010

It’s times like these I wish I stayed awake in Spanish class and paid more attention to bands like Rancid and Voodoo Glow Skulls.  Today’s band is the bilingual ska-punkers Rocksteady Breakfast out of St. Paul, MN.  They party hard, so you don’t have to.

Track of the Day: “Fun With Amanda” by Rocksteady Breakfast from the album Served All Day
